Extraordinary maintenance of cooling towers for Palermo Airport

Area of application
HVAC

Decsa Service carried out intensive extraordinary maintenance on two of the cooling towers installed at the Palermo Airport.

Good and frequent routine service activities, coupled with timely and targeted extraordinary maintenance activities for cooling towers, are essential to enable equipment performance to be maintained over time.

This is demonstrated by cases such as the Decsa cooling towers towers installed at the "Falcone Borsellino" Airport in Palermo, where 3 units of Decsa cooling towers model TVA 34-510 are currently in operation.

While the last unit was only ordered in 2023, the other two cooling towers are dated 2014. Yet despite having been in operation for more than 10 years, these towers are still performing their cooling task perfectly, thanks in part to the regular maintenance work that has been carried out on the units over time.

The Customer Problem

Just during the last routine maintenance that took place in 2023 , our Service technicians found problems on the 2014 towers that required extraordinary intervention (some rusted metal components and other components to be replaced).

The work, commissioned in August 2023 but carried out at the Client's behest in the spring of 2024, was carried out by one of our Service technicians assisted by on-site staff.

The solution: extraordinary maintenance work on cooling towers

Extraordinary maintenance activities on the two cooling towers in 2014 included:

  • Replacement of the fill pack
  • Replacement of some nozzles (those that are irrecoverable)
  • DecsaProt treatment on the deteriorated metal components*.

* DecsaProt is Decsa's special revamping treatment for recovering corroded components. The treatment consists of cleaning and repainting galvanized steel components with the special "DecsaProt" paint to eliminate and prevent the reformation of rust.

In the case of the TVA 34-510 cooling towers at Palermo Airport, since they are fiberglass equipment with only some metal components, DecsaProt paint was applied to the frame and main manifold (i.e., the only galvanized steel components).

During the extraordinary maintenance activity of the cooling cooling towers , our Service technician also verified the proper installation and operation of the latest cooling unit (2023).
